es, and triloba, from the Cape, have whiteflowers; nialvqflora and dioica are almost hardy, as theyare natives of North America; Ahutilon pulchellum is ashrub from New South Wales, almost hardy here, theleaves are of a shining dark-green, the flowers white andsweet; albida has whitish leaves and flowers; S. (Gaya) oc-cidentalis has violet flowers; hermannioides, nutans, and dis-ticha, yellow flowers, these are South American species,and all useful in those greenhouses, where shrubby plantsare wanted; they are easily increased by cuttings or seeds.A. vitifolia is one of the handsomest of the genus, a native ofChili, but hardy enough for the open air at Dublin, though itis better for the shelter of the greenhouse, and in England re-quires it. This handsome shrub is from four to six feet high,with cordate lobed leaves, and racemes of very beautiful flow-ers, the corollas of which are large, spreading, striated, bluish-lilac, the anthers yellow, and the styles reflexed, and of a Plate Y .

Vm-cent Tirookis Imp. Hibiscus grossuiajiaelbiiiis. MALVACEAE. 89 purple hue. A. venosa is a large greenhouse shrub, pro-ducing beautiful golden orange-coloured flowers in springand summer; the leaves are large, deeply seven-lobed; theflowers handsome, drooping; calyx large, bell-shaped, thetube inflated, globose, and the corolla twice as long as thecalyx, and richly veined with brown on a golden-orangeground; the style is curious, having nine branches at thesummit. These handsome shrubs thrive in good garden-soil, and should be plentifully supplied with water in thesummer, when they may be exposed to the open air. HIBISCUS. Gen. Char. (Monadelphia Polyandria.) Calyx double, outermany-leaved; stigmas five; capsule five-celled, many-seeded. Hibiscus was one of the Greek names for the Mallow.This well-known and highly ornamental genus is familiar toevery one, from the species introduced into the garden. H.grossulariafolius and Wraya are natives of Australia, andare very handsome species
